The Medical Society of South Carolina continues to make a meaningful impact on the health of our community through its financial support of an array of community organizations. Recently, the Medical Society granted $34,320 to East Cooper Meals on Wheels (ECMOW), a local non-profit that delivers one hot midday meal to residents of Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, Cainhoy and Wando who are home-bound or unable to provide their own meals. The grant money will help East Cooper Meals On Wheels expand their services to provide second meals to home-bound seniors and citizens who need additional daily nutrition.
Currently, through its 440+ volunteers, staff and board, ECMOW serves more than 400 meals a day, 365 days a year. The organization is also piloting a healthy meal initiative to provide salt and fat reduced meals, with more fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition to providing healthier meals to their clients, this initiative will increase funding opportunities for the organization. In addition, ECMOW now offers a “Blue Apron Meals” program that provides meals to those who’ve been recently hospitalized for illness, surgery, or injury.
More than just meals, ECMOW uses its daily face-to-face contact with clients to ensure their continued safety and well being. Should issues or needs arise, they partner with other area organizations to provide resources and support as needed.
